The Craft

Crafted by Hand

Five slow steps, all by hand. No machines, no shortcuts — just sandalwood powder, water, and time.

STEP 01

Weigh the Powder

Pure sandalwood, measured by hand — nothing added, nothing hidden.

Bitter green, dried grass, the smell of firecrackers — this incense does not court your favor; it commands your respect. Like the mugwort hung over the door at Dragon Boat Festival. Light it when something feels off.

Net Weight: 1.06 oz (30g)
Sticks Per Box: ~30
Burn Time: ~30 minutes per stick
Stick Length: 8.3 in (21 cm)
Ingredients: 3+ year aged Chinese mugwort (陈艾), plant-based binder
Smoke Level: Low smoke
Origin: China

"For an illness of seven years, seek mugwort aged three." When Mencius wrote these words twenty-three centuries ago, the Chinese had already been using mugwort longer than they had been writing.

The word chen — "aged" — in chen'ai is no mere modifier; it is a threshold. Fresh mugwort is fierce: its smoke chokes, its heat scorches. Only after three years of storage does the harshness dissipate, and its warmth become deep, enduring, piercing as a needle. The Huangdi Neijing says: "What the needle cannot reach, moxibustion can." By the Song dynasty, moxibustion was one of the twelve official branches of imperial medicine; Emperor Taizu himself applied burning mugwort to his ailing brother. Mugwort's everyday role runs equally deep: at the Dragon Boat Festival, every household hangs mugwort and calamus above the door to ward off evil and epidemic — a tradition unbroken for three thousand years.

Emperor Taizu applied moxibustion to his brother Zhao Guangyi. The Emperor asked, "Does it hurt?" — hoping it did, for pain meant the medicine had penetrated. His brother endured it and said: "Wait until you try it yourself." Zhao Guangyi would later ascend the throne as Emperor Taizong, and this exchange was solemnly recorded in the Song History.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Aged mugwort incense is traditionally used for cleansing spaces, grounding the mind, and promoting protection. Especially recommended during transitions — moving house, changing seasons, or whenever you feel unsettled.
Fresh mugwort is harsh — its smoke irritates and its heat is too intense. Only after three years does the harshness dissipate, transforming into warm, deep, penetrating fragrance.
Absolutely. Unlike white sage, mugwort has a grounding, protective quality — it doesn't just clear energy, it anchors and stabilizes.
